The challenge is a fresh take on the popular “ glow up” trends of the past few years, with an added dance element: a shoulder bounce move from the “Kick It” choreography, which originally gained popularity as part of Jalaiah Harmon’s Renegade dance. “I heard the lyrics ‘Let me introduce you to some new thangs!’ and the video just popped into my head!” Kia says. While video-chatting with Teen Vogue, Kia and Georjay are sitting on Kia’s bed (Ariana is at school) and behind them, a vibrant pink wall is covered with posters of just a handful of the K-pop groups they stan: Monsta X, Seventeen, BTS, and ATEEZ.Ī day after NCT 127 dropped their highly-anticipated second album, NCT #127 NEO ZONE, the girls were jamming to “Kick It” in Kia’s bathroom, getting ready to celebrate a friend’s birthday. They’ve been tagged in so many posts that “my Twitter is broken now,” she giggles. “I have notifications turned on for the NCT 127 Twitter account and when I saw it, I kind of went berserk and started crying,” Kia says, softly patting Georjay’s back as her friend wipes away happy tears with her sleeve. And then, on Wednesday (March 11), NCT 127 officially endorsed the challenge by recreating it themselves. But in just a few hours, the #KickItChallenge had gained 70,000 likes and inspired hundreds of fellow NCT fans, called “NCTzens,” to post their own versions. “I was just posting it for my mutuals and for ourselves,” says Kia, who had around 5,000 Twitter followers at the time. The Chicago natives shared a 28-second video, set to K-pop group NCT 127’s punchy new song “ Kick It,” that was made purely for fun. That’s why NCT 127 fans and childhood friends Kia (18), Ariana (18), and Georjay (19) didn’t expect much to happen when they created the #KickItChallenge. ![]() They have such a unique vibe and can fit into any genre you may like while still maintaining an NCT-labeled style. This song reminded me of some of their older works, which I absolutely loved.Anyone can create a dance challenge, but unless you’re Jalaiah Harmon or Charli D’Amelio, the odds of it going viral are… pretty low. It definitely causes a great mismatch within the sound of the song, but I believe it all flowed smoothly as the tempo slowed down naturally and perfectly with the first verse. For those of you who may not like the shouting-heavy parts, the group also added in relief moments, where the vocals are brought in. Thankfully, the song development is very unpredictable. ![]() Although the track may come off as loud or annoying, I believe the shouts and noisy hook of the track really represent the theme they were going for. I’m flying around all day long Bruce Lee” really left listeners feeling more powerful than ever. Lyrics such as “I throw a straight punch right left Bruce Lee. Kick It is a strong and dynamic hip-hop dance track, with a message that calls to overcome and beat psychological traumas. In my opinion, NCT 127 really ‘popped off’ with this new song. The various locations shot in the music video is also clearly inspired by Chinese traditional architecture, but also current elements such as motorcycles and neon lights that give the Kick It MV a modern twist where the members stand out accordingly. They recreated and added in a whole fight scene in their choreography to remind us of Lee. The choreography also provides many references to the movie star. Bruce Lee is well known for his yellow and black jumpsuit, something I can say all of us probably know of. The video included a large amount of martial arts and the iconic yellow and black combo outfits. The song and music video can be seen as inspired from or a tribute to the martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. Kick It is a very powerful track where the group definitely showed their most acrobatic side. This is also the album where nember Jungwoo has returned after he sat out of NCT 127 promotions since August of last year for health reasons. Kick It is the title track on Neo Zone, the group’s second studio album. Finally, my favorite K-pop group has made their long-awaited comeback! NCT 127, a sub-unit from SM Entertainment, has returned with Kick It – 9 months after the release of Superhuman last year.
